It's not Apples to Pears.  Points were obsoleted to electronic ignition
long before electronic engine controls & sophisticated emmisions came along.

Electronic ignition was first developed to address the short commings of 
mechanical points
and not to accomodate emmisions issues (other than the fact that dirty points 
cause pollution)
