That's what I needed to know. You saw the crank, so it looks like I should get
off with only polishing it. So the .020 bearings are only if I need to grind
the crank. If I only polish it, I'll get the standard bearings. I'll see what
the shop says. Thanks.

Hi Edward,

Rod bearing size is totally unrelated to the cylinder bore size! But if the
crankshaft has been turned, you need to use the correct size bearing
inserts, mains and rods. Thrust washers seldom need replacing, but be sure
to measure the end play. The machine shop will tell you what's needed.
Don't order rods and mains until you know the size of the crank after
turning, if it needs it.

OTOH, you need to have the pistons on hand at the machine shop prior to
boring the block. Check with your machinest what size to order prior to his
boring the block. The piston sizes typically vary tiny amounts and the shop
usually compensates for that in finishing off the bore.

When he does the cyl head, he may ask for you to get some seats for some
exhaust ports as well as some or all the valves. Valve seats typically
recess a lot with age on these heads. Many had no seats other than the
casting of the head. You should ask him what valves he wants replaced.
Should also likely replace all the valve guides and which seals he wants to
use. Steel guides are fine. That's what the originals were and they lasted
50 years.

The valve seat area between #2 and #3 bores in the head can sometimes be
problematic because of the very small amount of head material area between
the two.

Good machine shops can work around these problems usually just fine.

Later, Paul A

question. I'm planning on going .020 over. Moss has a different part # for
the rod bearings for .020 than stock. Is there something I will have to do
to my crankshaft to accommodate these? I have a 1275.
