I am firmly in Ron's camp about not skimping on tires. The AWD in a Subaru
is really good, you should be able to use a good all season tire without any
problems. I run winter tires on my cars and trucks mostly due living on a
mountain, the last couple of miles can be a real problem.

If you want the best winter tires you can't go wrong with a set of Nokian
Hakkapelitta. They make both a winter tire and an all season Hakkapelitta.
I ran a set of Continental Viking snow tires on my wife's FWD Passat. They
worked great on the mountian where we live. We were able to get up and down
once there was some sand on the road. When the factory tires on the Subaru
Outback wear out I think I will replace them with a set of Hakkapelitta all
season tires.

Whatever you decide on let us know how it works out.
