I had a racing VW that pooped out at 7000; that was due to restricted air

This Spring I had exactly the same symptoms. I checked everything three
times
(carbs, dwell, timing, fuel filter, gas, etc, etc), which I am sure you have
also. Finally I purchased and installed a new dizzy cap, condenser, plug
wires and coil. It's running great now.

I inspected/tested everything I pulled out, and found nothing, But one of
those components is defective at higher RPMs under load.
