I am running an ammeter in both my Lotus 7 and Bricklin - original
equipment. The voltmeter is definitely better than the ammeter. For an
explanation why, see here;

I would have a voltmeter over an ammeter just for the safety aspect.
I thought I would take this opportunity to mention a gadget I am using in my
Lotus 7... I bought a battery monitor made by Innova (Equus 3721). It tells
you both the state of charge of the battery, and how much the
generator/alternator is charging the battery. I put an electrical outlet in
my Lotus to use the battery monitor, as I find it much more accurate and
useful than the standard ammeter. Best was the price: $15.47 at WalMart,
plus $5 or so for the electrical outlet.
