There is a DIY tranny flush method that I once did on
a Merkur Scorpio I use to own.

The procedure was descibed on the Merkur list I subscibed to at
the time

As I recall it entailed disconnecting the line from the trans cooler
and allowing the transmission itself to pump the fluid out, by letting the
engine
idle in DRIVE with the emergency brake secured.

Best to search the web for the particulars.

It does no harm because you don't run very long in this condition.

When i did I did this I also dropped the pan and changed the filter.

At the time the car had over 80k miles and I noticed a big improvement
in the shifting afterwards. So much so that I am now a proponent for regular
tranny
flushes every 30-40k miles. I no longer do it myself, but I have the dealer do
it.
