Kirk,

Half shaft breakage can be a problem but it is usually a torque (twisting)
breakage and most often at the splined end where it goes into the diff.
Others know more about this. I suspect it is due to the quality of the metal
in the half shaft. I broke two of them on my 1946 MG TC back in the 60s. I
was told that the steel used wasn't up to snuff and one mechanic showed me
what he said was "crystalization" of the steel in the half shaft.

Anyway, point is, I doubt the comment about "hitting the rear end down".
Most of the failed ones I've seen happened when someone dumped the clutch
placing a sudden hard twist on the end of the half shaft in the diff. On the
busted ones you can actually even see the twist in the splined end.

Cheers!!
Jim
