[Spridgets] Handling

My wife's Subaru wagon, a completely pedestrian vehicle, clearly handles better 
than my stock Midget in good repair.  Has the improvement of modern suspensions 
just been a matter of refinements, or has there been some major change in 
design?  I confess that I have never pushed either one very hard, so maybe I 
haven't experienced the true difference.
