I'm afraid someone else will have to answer that one for you, Dean.  Of
course (now that I've thought about it), I don't recall Porsche running
straight-cut gears in their race cars, back in the 50s, so, maybe the real
world difference between straight-cut & helical gears is not as great as we
may have been lead to believe.

I wonder if even the side thrust and efficiency issue is of much concern
anymore given the state of modern bearings and lubrication.

I'd rather have the extra strength of the helical gear over a straight cut
gear in a competition environment anyway.
