Tiger Soft Top Questions

I'm about ready to start work on the convertible top for my Mk II
and have the following questions.

Were the top bows originally painted gray or black?

Is soft top installation best left to an upholstery shop 
or can I do it myself with no experience?

Are there different materials available in the tops?  Which 
is best to use or easiest to work with?

Any FREE interior/soft trim stuff available out there?  I'll 
buy the beer.
