Darrell,

A few years back I put Redline synthetic in the Cobra's diff (Salisbury/
Dana w/Powr-Lok), the transmission (T-10) and the steering rack. All
started leaking within a short period. I know a fellow with a mid 60's
Ferrari who was considering using synthetic in the engine and
transmission so he called Redline to ask their opinion. They
recommended against using Redline in older cars unless they had been
recently rebuilt because synthetic oils tends to leak past old seals
and gaskets. I've heard two theories on why this is true: 1) the
highly detergent nature of synthetics oils cleans away the gunk that
been keeping older seals and gaskets from leaking 2) old dried out seals
and gaskets just don't seal synthetic oils as well as they do regular
oils.

However, other than the leaks, I have no real complaints. When I
replace the seals, I will probably stay with the synthetics. I have
heard that toploader synchros work better with less slippery dyno oils,
but I can't say that I noticed any difference in my T-10. One thing to
avoid no matter what kind of oil you decide on is transmission oil with
sulfide additives. The sulfides tend to attack the copper in the brass
synchros.
