Steve made some good points.  Having gone out the top and out the bottom
on several occasions I will highly recommend the bottom technique.
Taking the motor out the top without an extra tall crane or an oil
change pit is a big pain in the petunias.  There must be a carefully
choreographed ballet of car, motor angle and jackstands.  

Of course, taking a motor out the bottom is only a small pain in the
petunias.  The big disadvantage of going out the bottom is the removal
of the front suspension.  By the power of positive thinking, you can
turn that bug into a feature by taking the opportunity to inspect the
welds along the unit and to refurb as needed.  If you have a handy
engine dolly, (see Mark Olson's web page for a drawing of the one I
made) out the bottom is even easier.

Those with  suspensions welded to frame can ignore the above message.
