I've had similar experience with those
"chrome" thermostat housings. On top of
it, when you tighten the bolts, the
flange bends so you can't get a really
good seal. While you idea of using zinc
as a sacrificial element is of interest,
there is a much less complicated
solution.
Use a re-pro early Mustang Aluminum
thermostat housing, which comes in two
flavors. One with the original Ford
numbers, and one plain (for a little
less money). The good one costs about
$25, and looks good and works good.
Then you go to your local plumbing
supply, or Home Depot, and buy some
unplated zinc washers, or whatever, and
fasten it inside the expansion tank with
stainless safety wire. This keeps it
from wandering while its dissolving
away.
This way you have a good thermostat
housing and a corrosion control element.
