Rootes originally offered two versions of the Series III Alpine, Sports
Tourer and Gran Turismo. They planned originally to market both models
for Tigers, too
The S.T. was the vinyl dash model. It had rubber matting instead of
carpeting and folding convertible top. On the Alpine model, the exhaust
manifold was noisier but enhanced performance.
The GT came with standard hardtop, but the area where the convertible
top was normally stowed was upholstered and diminished for more space
behind the seats. Carpeting was standard, as was the wood veneer dash
and wood steering wheel, sunvisors, and an interior courtesy light
operated by door switches.
Again, Norm Miller is the latest writer to put numbers on these models.
Up until the last ten years, the number of separate model Tigers was
guessee at about 40-50 cars.
Most of us are driving Tigers built after this point, equipped with most
of the GT things, like the wood dash and steering wheel and carpeting,
but also with convertible tops and the extra cost factory hardtop.
