I broke my throttle cable a couple of years ago. I did cobble something
together that has worked well for me. I went to the local Moutain Bike
(ATB) shop and purchased the largest diameter sheathed cable they sold. The
cable I selected is intended for brake actuation and is much larger in
diameter than the type used for the derailers. The Bike Dude said the
sheath had some sort of fancy liner to increase the lifespan of the cable
in severe operating environments, he may have used the term "Extremely
Knarly". He was appalled at the thought of me using this cable on a "car",
especially one that runs on gasoline. I considered the engine compartment
of my car to be an "Extremely Knarly" place at times, so I bought a piece.
The cable sheathing had stainless barrels at both ends and its total length
was about 5 '. I retained the larger of the two soft metal cable end
fittings and used that end at the pedal. I trimmed it to fit my
application, soldered my original carb fitting on the cut end of the cable
and installed it. I installed the sheathing with the trimmed end under the
dash so it doesn't look like a hack job from the engine compartment. It has
worked well with two throttle return springs and a heavy right foot. It
hasn't shown any sign of melting or wear.........Now that I have posted
this, it will probably break tomorrow.
Be careful when you replace the cable, however you choose to do it. I used
the term "cobbled" in jest. There is nothing funny about a 2500 pound car
with 300 H.P. and a throttle stuck WFO.
