Dave,
You are absolutely correct: there are roll bars and show bars and
that is the reason racing organizations like SCCA require a small hole
drilled in the tubing for inspection to determine the gauge of the tubing of
the bar. A "roll bar" made out of thinwall exhaust tubing is probably worse
than having no bar at all. Again you are correct about a roll bar being good
place to mount shoulder belts: however if I'm not mistaken, there are no
sportscar racing organizations remaining that allow a single mounting point
for shoulder belts. For safety, both SCCA and SOVREN require 5 point
harnesses which includes the "eunuch" antisubmarine belt.
