To The Rear End Experts No, no no. We're talking cars here!

As I probably babbled on the list a few months ago, I'm seriously considering
buying a Mercury Marquis with 4.7 liter V8. I was planning on ordering the
handling package which comes with dual exhaust, different shocks, springs and
sway bars. In the past the rear end ratio for the handling package has been
3.27 as opposed to the standard which is about 3.22.

The 2000 yr models with handling package have been changed to a 3.55 rear
end. The questions is how do you think this new ratio will affect the gas
mileage. The original standard, 3950 lb. car knocked me over. I rented one
for a weekend and got 26 1/2 mpg on state highways and cities and 29 mpg on
the interstate. This is with the AC running all the time. I figured the
1999 model with 3.27 might drop off 1 or 2 mpg over the standard, but I am
really worried about the mileage on the 3.55.

How does anyone think the 3.55 will affect the gas mileage and if it turns
out poor, how expensive a job would it be to have a local shop change back to
a standard ratio. I realize that the transmission is probably adjusted for a
particular ratio.

I was planning to order the car tomorrow (Wednesday) so if you have some
knowledge on the subject I'd appreciate getting it tonight. Maybe send it to
me personally so the list isn't bothered with the non Tiger content.

Thanks for bearing with me on this and thanks in advance for the information
that I know this list can provide. Mark L.
