I just received the latest catalog from Griot's Garage 800-345-5789,
which showed a product, Paint Saving, Clear Protective Shield, that can
be used to protect painted areas more prone to chips and scratches, such
as front ends, wheel wells, etc., according to them.  

I called and they said it could be applied, like window tint, with a
squeegee, and removed without harming the paint.  

Cost is 2" wide at $2.50/ft.  You would have to make several pieces, but
the price is right.

Ad said owner had it own wife's Suburban's jams for 2 years and could
peel it off at any time and paint still looks brand new.

After car together, I am going to try it for my hardtop.  It will be
several months from now, so don't wait to hear from me, just yet.
