Not meaning to trivialize the negative impact of higher gas prices on 
certain sectors; e.g., truckers, but here's an interesting article that 
puts this subject in historical perspective. According to this (probably) 
reliable source, the price of gas has been rather steadily declining in 
today's dollars, from about $2.50 a gallon in 1920 to about half that 
today. I'm pretty sure it would be even cheaper without the MTBE debacle.
