today i used Permatex rad clean. it has hydrochloric acid in it. that seems
like serious stuff but i have serious issues. i quickly sprung a leak on the
header tank. as a quick fix i used a large hose clamp and a piece of rubber
(years of navy training) to stem the leak. I think i will carry this in my
tool box from now on. the directions said to let the car run for ten
minutes. Well i let it run for an hour and half or so. i would have to put
the hose on the rad as before to keep her cool. when i drained the rad it
was as black as paint. i then filled the system and open the drain. next i
put the hose in the tank placing the car on a feed and bleed system for five
minutes after the water ran clear. being the brave soul i am i decided to go
for a drive. i drove up a mountain on winding roads. it was a blast at about
200 degrees. the surprise was on the way down. the temp actually dropped.
back at the bottom i went through some traffic where i got up to 225. later
i went back up and down the mountain and she cooled to 210 or so. once back
home i reflushed the system with water and it was black as paint again. i
guess this is helping some. i am currently flushing with preston as i write.
it is a little less harsh on the system though. i just want my aluminum rad
to hurry up so i can forget all of this. i am taking her out on the freeway
as soon as traffic clears to try her out at speed. wish me luck, i hate
sitting on the side waiting for her to cool off.
