More info on my electrics problem from todays poke & prod at it:

- Before inserting ignition key, *MY* direct wired accessories work

- When I turn the key to "On":
        - ignition light comes on
        - fuel pump primes
At this stage, my lights work, my horn works, my electric fan works, etc.

- I turn the key to "Start" & I hear one click, like a switch clicking on/off
and all the electrics, even the direct wired stuff goes dead. The starter motor
never turns. Power at the battery is fine, but it there is no power at the fuse
box. Both fuses are in perfect working order by the by.

- This dead state persists for quite a while (took overnight for it to return to
direct wired items working)

- When I remove the white/red wire from my ignition (which does seem to be wired
to the solenoid switch, just for fun) all the electrics come back to life

- If I put the white/red wire (i.e. solenoid & starter) back into the ignition,
I go back to the dead state

- It does seem to be repeatable, i.e. remove the solenoid switch connection from
the ignition and all springs back to life; restore the connection and everything
dies.

>From this, I am guessing that either the starter or solenoid is goofy. Is this
a reasonable conclusion? Can someone give me pointers on how to decide whether
it is the starter (shorting out I would assume) or the solenoid (what the heck
is a solenoid for anyway?)

Thank in advance,

rick
