Bill,
Sorry for the late response you may already have a bunch. I have been
homeless the last little while.
The pilot bearing if it gave out may be a symptom of misalignment of the
Bellhousing to the engine and that the trans is not centered perfectly on
the engine side-loading the pilot bearing. This assumes that the engine may
have been rebuilt or parts swapped form another car. If you do go through
the effort to replace the bearing use a dial indicator to ensure that the
two pieces are aligned correctly.
