Tim, go to Radio Shack, and get a IR Thermometer, for less than $50. 
Check the radiator at the top intake, and the thermostat housing if you
can find a place that is not chrome or shinny.

This gives you an accurate reading, not what the Smiths temp gauge says.

Stop fooling around, and sleep at night, knowing that the temp on the
engine is OK.  

Besides, $50 is nothing compared to the cost of the engine.
