I'd like to contact Tom Hall about modifying my Smith's Tach to take a
voltage reference input. Looks to me like it shouldn't be hard to adapt
a multivibrator chip to the old relic, but I'd sure appreciate seeing
what others have done, especially if it worked well and was easy.

I have a circuit I use in my tach calibrator that will do exactly what
you want it to do. Unfortunately, I am in Tokyo at the moment, so I
don't have access to the circuit. could I trouble you to ping me again

If you prefer, there are a group of 4-5 tigers list members who are
designing a new circuit board that will replace the electronics of the
stock tach. It will work with your kind of ignition and will be much
more accurate and stable than the stock tach. You could ping Tom Hall
who is one of that group if you wanted to go that way.

I've read your '95 article which is quite good. I need to connect a
Smiths tach to the tach output terminal of a Ford EDIS (electronic
distributorless) ignition which uses the typical American single wire
direct connection design. Presently I have the primary feed for the coil
packs running through the inductive loop but get no deflection. (The
tach was a known good unit previously)
Can you suggest how the inductively coupled tach might be connected to
the direct wired output? Any help would be much appreciated.
