The real problem is the ring gear spacing or depth. Going the other way
you can use a spacer. Don't know that the 2.88's will fit on the carrier
you've got. Better check it out with a gear shop.

  I'm no expert on the matter, but there MIGHT be a bolt hole size issue
on
the ring gear. Try the Tigers United site www.tigersunited.com  as I
think
that there are articles covering this in greater depth. Also the pinion
hub
on the 2:88 gear LIKELY (but not definitely) is different from that on
the
3:73 pinion. Hope this gets you going in the right direction.
