Hi Kirt,

Here are some things you must be concerned about when installing an
alternator and 302. I'm sure others will have something to add or optional
suggestions.

Go with the one wire alternator. They are actually very easy to hook up but
you will lose your charge light. An ammeter or voltmeter is better anyway.
Get a Tiger wiring diagram. I will send you one if you don't have one.

There is one bolt on the head of the 1987 engine that holds the alternator
bracket that is larger than the 260. You may have to drill out the bracket,
depending on how large the hole is in the Sunbeam Specialties bracket.

Pulley alignment is your biggest problem. Here are some things you will have
to do.

1. Install a new "V" belt waterpump from a 289/302 and press the mounting
flange
    rearward to the 260 location.

2. Using the waterpump pulley as the reference, line up the alternator and
crank
pulleys. To do this you can machine the nose of the damper to move the
pulley
rearward and probably add spacers at the alternator pivot. You must find
and
re-drill if necessary, the crank pulleys with 4 bolt holes and the right
off set to get
alignment. You can find Ford pulleys in junk yard and separate multiple
pulleys if
    necessary. Maybe someone makes them.

3. Do not use a three bolt balancer on the 1987 302 engine. It will have the
wrong
    counter weight.

4. The front chain cover will work but you will have to drill a new hole for
the dip stick.
You may be able to see an impression in the cover for the hole.

5. Plug the EGR holes in the heads. The engine doesn't run well with those
open.
Also, don't forget to tap and plug the dipstick hole on the side. Some
people have
forgotten that wonder where all the oil is coming from. It's harder to do
when the
    engine is in the car.

                                                        John Logan
