To Jim: Well that seems to clear it up. Its amazing how 36 year old
documentation still exists to that particularity.
To Steve: I didn't mean to suggest that pulling the vin plate would not
subject someone to hassle; only that a crushed or confiscated car would not be
the result. Your examples, nonetheless, certainly point out true negatives
that can result, and as always your suggestions and points should be taken
seriously. The guy with the question should note the unanimity behind the idea
that the vin tag does not come off.
If it is taken off, occasionally "correct" rivets are offered on e-bay.
