Kerosene, and it brother diesel oil, have been used as solvents for 
years and as John states work well.

Diesel was used in many shops, because most of the trucks, air 
compressors, etc. were diesel, and it was in there private tanks, and 
generally cost less than Kero. 

As a kid, I worked during the summer at an construction company, and 
didn't know there was any solvent other than diesel.
