John,

While unable to tell for certain this common element is the cause, it 
might be.  The gas gauge and the temp gauge are both energized by the 
output of the same 10 volt instrument voltage regulator.  It is shown in 
the wiring diagrams in the "Workshop Manual / Electrical Schematics" 
portion on http://www.TigersUnited.com.

Physically this regulator is located in its small metal can underneath 
the dashboard near the "glove box" opening.

A solid state version of this regulator is being made, as well as a 
replacement electromechanical original type.

The Tach is NOT connected to this device, and may have its own problems.
