Larry
According to a Hot Rod Magazine article, Sept 1982; in 1977 the Ford
top loader was reintroduced as an overdrive transmission. The 1979 version
went to an aluminum case with an internal shift linkage; all build by Tremac
in Mexico.

The article is about converting the aluminum top loader into direct
drive 4th gear using old top loader parts. The converted top loader, the
article states, saves 50 lbs. and is strong enough to withstand the rigors
of NASCAR Grand National competition.
