I just saw the pictures Malcom made available (and the underside shot on
Ebay). Being the owner of a "near" basket case Tiger (and a black one at
that) it reminds me of the pictures the previous owner recently sent me
circa 1980. Externally the car looked nice, but as time proved by 2000 (when
I bought the car) what was going on on the inside was heavily showing on the
outside.
Just as a point of reference I paid $5,100 for my car. However this
included a Hardtop, a complete replacement front clip and about $800 worth
of new parts. Though I wouldn't call it a driver by any means it actually
did move under it's own power. I had the seller agree that the seperate (and
removed) items listed above were exclusive of the vehicle and had the Tiger
itself priced at $3,500. The ongoing saga is available for comparision at
http://www.tigersunited.com/techtips/WittResto101/rt-WittResto101A.asp if
you haven't seem it already.
This "ebay Tiger" has some advantages over my car, but in subtle ways I
think mine might be better in other areas. Even using my higher value
($5,100) that's still $12,000.57 more (and $13,600.57 more car for car) for
what is likely in the end a very similar Tiger. The talk of late about Tiger
values not rising in part may be related to prices paid for cars of the
condition of the "ebay Tiger." When things like this happen I'm sure the
Tiger's reputation is not improved. On the otherhand I would hate to see
cars of this condition simply parted out. It would exclude individuals such
as myself from ever owning one (given that the selling price would actually
reflect condition). A lot of comments have been made about the $$$ to make
this car right. One can also cut cost considerably, but pay for it in time.
Its 5 years next month for me and probably a few years away from being done.
Either way it's going to cost this poor (or soon he will be) guy.
