If the carb is leaking when the engine is off, you need to look at needle
valve
and seat on the float. With the engine off and ignition off (Remember you
have
an electric fuel pump). The needle turns the fuel off when the float raises
to
the full position. Carefully look into the carb after turning the engine
off. If
the gas is dribbling in, the seat is leaking. You should have gotten one
with
your rebuild kit. Pop the top off the car (DONT DROP ANYTHING INTO THE
INTAKE) or pull the carb again. Remove the float and needle value. Its the
small square thing hanging by a small metal clip under the float. The
rubber end is what makes the seal. Now you are an expert at rebuilding
Ford carbs.
With the engine running it uses gas from the bowl and the float goes down
raising the needle valve which lets in gas until the float raises and drops
the
needle back into its seat. With the engine and pump off the needle is
the only thing that keeps the bowl from leaking into the carb. With the
engine off and pump running, you are asking that little piece of rubber
to keep the gas out of the carb.
Small possibility of the bushing in the shaft is worn. But this is a vacuum
leak as there shouldnt be any gas there. A Carb shop can rebush this shaft.
Its not a job for a novice rebuilder.
