Jim, take a look at the photo link above.
The "cap" is captured between the lower flared stick section and the
upper two "wings". Either Ford install the "cap" then flared the lower
stick or stamped the upper stick to make the two little retaining wings
to capture the cap. Apparently Ford either made the slot in the "cap" a
little bigger than normal or didn't make the two "wings" big enough on
some dip sticks, and when the "cap" gets some wear it works its way off
the top.
 
As stated, look on any pre-1965 Ford, any engine size, as the caps are
the same.
Getting the cap to fit on, and stay on, your stick might be a problem.
