I'm fine. Lafayette is 120 miles west of New Orleans and 150 miles west of
the eye of the hurricane. Being on the "clean" side of the circulation, we
had winds of about 40 mph and almost no rain. We got more rain out of a
thunderstorm yesterday. No one suffered any damage here.

Lafayette is now the temporary home to about 7000 refugees. For a town of
110,000, that is a substantial influx. And they are likely to be here a
long time. Every apartment and rental property in town has already been
snapped up. 600 displayed students have been enrolled in the local public
schools.

Things seem to be going OK here. Can't say the same about New Orleans. It
was a great place to visit for a day, but it was a cesspool to live in, and
now it is completely unlivable and will be likely a year.

If you would like to make a donation to help out, I'd recommend the United
Way of Acadiana. Check them out at www.unitedwayofacadiana.com. If you
want the money to go to New Orleans, just specify "Orleans Parish" on the
check (we don't have counties in this state - we have parishes).

Thanks for your concern. B9473298 is safely stored in my garage until the
first cool front makes its way this far south - about one more month.

Hey, guys:

If I'm not mistaken, we have a list member by the name of Jim Pickard from
Louisiana. I don't remember what part of Louisiana he's from, but let's
just
hope it's not New Orleans. Has anyone heard from him lately?
