The battery vent hose is correct for the MKI, IA. Mine is still there.
The hose has six small holes in it to attach the battery cap nipples
on the Lucas battery. The MK II had a red plastic 'manifold' that
ran across the battery replacing the caps. It has 'LUCAS' in
block letters. The manifold was attached to a short black vent
hose that ran to the trunk hole. This hole is one way to see
if your car has an Alpine trunk floor.

According to John Clegg, Ninevah, IN who was one of the
Rootes engineers assigned to the Alpine and Tiger, The
hose came about due to excess hydrogen gas being
generated during a long term high speed test. The resulting
explosion destroyed the car and burnt down the test
lab.
