Don,
  Your test seem to indicate that the cable itself is good. If the cable
wasn't pushed back far enough into the transmissions square receptical you
will not see it turning in your test drive.  You could also try gently
pushing the cable in on a test drive to make sure it engages the receptical.
Even having some one push the car (for safety, rather than a test drive)
would work
  A sure way to test it is to jack up the driver's side of the car,
(properly supported, you don't want the car falling on you) and with the
cable diconnected have someone rotate the rear tire (assuming you don't have
a limited slip differential). Observe the square receptical for the cable on
the transmission and see if it is rotating. A flashlight and mirror may be
helpful to limiting how far under the car you need to go. The cracked gears
in the speedo itself are the likely cause though.
