That number should also be on the Vin Plate.
A27KA = 4/27/64 engine group
4E16F = May 16, 1964 the engine build date
C40E-6015E engine block casting started production in May, 1964
4E11 = casting date May 11, 1964
Everything here is consistent.
This probably means all the A27KA engine group are the C40E-E casting which
was the last casting change for the 260 block
The inconsistency of the engine numbers, I believe is due to shipping and
storage of the engines.
I don't know the details for this but here is how I see it. The
Cleveland Foundry casts and builds the engines, then they go to packaging
and shipping where they probably receives the valve cover labels and
numbers. The engine and transmission are crated and packaged for shipment
in sequential order and possibly put into cargo containers. The crates and
containers are in 1 order on the ship; in England they are removed and
stacked in a different order. The crates are most likely put on the train
and delivered to Rootes receiving and put in storage, another order.
Someone has to break down the crates and the engines are sent to final line
storage or to final line delivery, another order. I think you can see how
the sequential order has now become a random sequence of engine numbers for
the final assembly line. There is no clear explanation of how all of this
was handled so this is purely a guess on my part.
Hopefully this gives you a slight understanding how and why the engine
numbers jump around so.
