Paul,

The 6RA is used to isolate the alternator field when the key is off. The
white wire picks the relay (key on), sends battery voltage (brown/black
wire) through a @ 20w 15 ohm resistor whose only function as far as I can
tell is to light the ignition light on the dash to the I connector
(brown/yellow wire) to the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator
determines when and by how much to power the alternator field and charge the
battery.

So, battery voltage (say @ 12 1/2v) is appropriate when the battery is
charged, and @ 14V is appropriate when the battery needs charging. With the
engine off you should read @ 12 1/2v on a fully charged battery (I'm sure
you know that but it bears repeating.) Anything less should result in @ 13
1/2 - 14v when the engine is running (from the alternator).

Key point: is the ignition light on when the key is on? If so you're feeding
the voltage regulator. If not, suspect the lamp first, then the the 6RA
(available from Rick at SS or from British Wiring), or the resistor is bad
(available from Rick).

Tom. who just got done playing with the same problem
