Paul
I'm not an electrical expert but my understanding is that the 6RA
relay just gives the ignition warning light a clean ON / OFF signal. I
would think that if there is a problem with the relay that the ignition
light would be faintly ON or flickering some.

Basic wiring: the relay has 4 connections
C2 - brown wire = battery 12v
W2 - white wire = switched 12v
C1 - brown/ black - relay to ignition warning light
W1 - black = ground

Voltage regulator:
I - brown/ yellow - regulator to ignition warning light

There is also a resistor in parallel with the ignition warning
light; I'm not sure of the value - 5 Ohm , 5 Watt comes to mind but it's
just a guess. The resistor could be shorting internally or to ground. I
don't know what this resistor looks like or where it is located to really
say.

Check that all the connections and wires are in good shape at the voltage
regulator, alternator, ignition switch, 6RA relay, ignition light, resistor
and the fuses.

I believe you can disconnect any or all of the wires for the relay and
ignition light to remove the relay and ignition warning light from the
circuit; then check the running voltage. This should help you isolate the
problem a bit more.

Also check that the fan belt is in good condition and adjusted correctly. I
would think you would hear belt squeal if the belt was too loose but it
should be checked.

Subject: [Tigers] MKII charging problem

I have a MKII with an ongoing charging problem. At times I get 13.7 to 14v -
other times a little under 12v. Alternator is good, voltage regulator is
fine and connections are good. It has been suggested the 6RA relay (which is
apparently unique to the MKII) could be the problem. What does this relay
do? Can it be repaired? (what values?) Bypassed? Replaced?

Thanks,
Paul Jelinek
