The Ignitor II has better coil current control... I've heard anecdotally that
one misfeature of the original Ignitor is that it can leave the coil current
on if you have the ignition on but the engine not running. The Ignitor II is
supposed to fix that, among other
improvements. For $20 extra it may be worth it, to avoid the hassles
associated with an overheated coil.

Other than that - I've got an Ignitor II in a distributor I use for tach
testing, it works, and it's easy to install and wire. If you use it with a
resistor coil, then you should wire the ignitor power to the 12V side of the
resistor.
