Chris---It's not too big of a job to replace the control cable. Just
watch the way it wends itself around things under the dash.

If the cable is otherwise in good shape, it may be easier to reattach
what's left of the cable to the slide, by trimming back the cable sheath
to expose more of the cable. Loosen the clip that holds the sheath so
you can move the sheath closer to the valve. If you don't get the full
open/closed range on the valve, favor making sure it closes. You'll
still get plenty of hot water in the half open position.
