You're probably on the right track. Try swapping a battery in
temporary from a different car and see it turns over/ starts. Could
be the battery is nearly gone, sometimes a shorted cell would give
similar indications as you describe.

Subject: Starting Problem

Well the weather finally seemed good enough to get the 6 out of
hibernation, so having checked the battery was charged I put it in,
hopped
in the drivers seat turned the key and nothing happened. Tried playing
with
the wires to the starter etc - no change. Decided to try jumping it
thinking maybe I'd been wrong about the battery and sure enough the
car
started. Took a good 15 minute drive, taking care not to stall it, got
back
switched it off and tried again to start it. Once again nothing.
Double checked the battery but it was still showing fully charged.
Tried
giving the battery posts and cables a good wire brushing , no change.
So
looked in Dan's book and tried to test the starter by hooking a jump
cable
from the positive on the battery to the B terminal on the Starter
solenoid,
sparks but the starter didn't turn. The other strange thing is that
the
headlights worked when the car was running but don't work when it's
not.
Having learnt the hard way how easy it is to leave the lights on I
know
they should work at all times. The only other thing I noticed was that
the
Negative Battery cable was looking a bit old so maybe it's a bad
ground.
Suggestions??
