I assume you have jiggled the steering wheel right and left while trying to
turn the key? Do you have another key, perhaps this one is worn?

Subject: Ignition key won't turn

My 71 TR6 presented me with a problem 2 days ago --- the ignition key won't
turn.
I assume it has to do with the steering lock, but that's really just a
guess.

The details.... Starting last spring ('02) the key would occasionally
refuse to turn.
The lock mechanism was slightly loose on the steering column
and wiggling the mechanism while applying gentle clockwise pressure to the
key would get it unlocked --- no problem. Recently, there was a noticeable
increase in the amount of wiggling required to turn the key. Two days ago I
couldn't get it to turn at all. So far I've tightened the lock, but that
didn't help any.

I'm ready to remove the lock to see what gives, but wanted to know what to
expect/look for. Any ideas?

I assume that the locking pin (?) is binding on the slot in the bottom of
the
steering column outer tube. Is there a tried-and-true remedy?
