Cregg Cowan indicated that he was having a problem with the ignition switch on
his early TR6. Several years ago I had the beginning of a similar problem.
This, coupled with its PIA location prompted me to move my ignition switch to
the dash to where it was located on the TR4As and I believe TR 250s. The
change was simple and the results were a major improvement over the contortions
required to get to the stock ignition switch. I ordered a new ignition switch
for a TR4A (Moss I think), made pigtails to extend the 6 (I think) wires that
go onto the back of the old switch to the new location and plugged them into
the new switch. This switch goes next to the choke cable which is the far
right cable on that plenum thingy on the dash. The manufacturer conveniently
left 1 vacant hole in this piece (it must have been an accident) which is
perfect for the ignition switch. I read somewhere that the current switch
(abomination) was the result of BLs ingeneous (I jest) solution to US
government rules mandating locking steering wheels in cars manufactured after
about 1969. I removed the old one by carefully loosening the screws to the
locking mechanism with a pair of vice grips but you may have to do some
drilling or grinding to remove the locking collar.
