ordered a clutch install kit from .......
went to put the cross shaft, throwoutout bearing etc in.
my car is a 71 and has the anti rattle spring. my 73 did also and i think my
250 did long ago.
anyway i go to put the taper pin in and it's really tight. so tight i broke
a wrench trying to get it seated all the way on the fork and gashed my
finger :( when the wrench broke, long story.
after a week of recovery i went back and put the old cross shaft in to
compare. no problems, hmmm.
with the original shaft i had 1/4" to play with where the shaft slides in
and the anti rattle spring goes. with the shaft i got from .......... the
arm is tight against the gearbox and the anti rattle spring is totally
squished.
i called ......... and ,,,,,,,,, said my car doesn't take an anti rattle
spring, hmmmm.
he said the reason the pin is so tight is because i used the spring. i don't
really buy that. the shafts are drilled for the pin in a slightly different
spot but i haven't measured it precisely.
i also noticed the new shaft from ........ is a soft metal. just putting
the new shaft in left a spiral pattern scratched into the metal where it
went thru the new bushings. nice looking pattern though!
i also wonder about the new fork, the throwout bearing sleeve drags on the
input shaft a bit with either the new or old cross shaft and i don't thnk
the input shaft is bent.
by the way i bought the same kit from ......... last year for my 73 and the
hole for the taper pin was drilled about 1/4" off and they sent me a new
one. said they had a bad batch.
