Bob,

Replacing these bushings is just time consuming because of how far down you
have to tear the column down to do it, but it is not hard. On the other
hand, before you do the bushings, check two other things. The column is
secured at the firewall to a metal bracket which may no longer have any
integrity, as you said, from leveraging oneself from the car. Mine needed
extensive repair to get it to hold the column properly.

The other thing to check is that there are two obscure screws/bolts that
hold the steering column bracket to the back of the metal dash fascia.
These little buggers get loose for the same reason and the steering wheel
flops all over. Try finding and tightening these as it may well be your
problem. Look for screws that are installed from the front of the car aft,
not up or down or from the side.

If your horn does not periodically honk without pushing the button chances
are your bushings are acceptable.

Good luck.
