Why oil on the trunions?

Hi,

 

I'm rebuilding the front end on my TR6.  I've read in the manual where it
says to use Hypoid gear oil to lubricate the trunions.  With the excellent
modern synthetic greases available, why use oil?  What is the benefit or
advantage of using oil instead of grease?
