Vance---You've properly surmized the reason that the tranny won't mate
with the engine...the two are not on the same angle. The engine must be
raised more at the back plate, OR the tranny must be lowered more at the
tail shaft flange, to get the distance nearly the same at the top and
bottom of the bell housing.

I don't know if the rear mount configuration is different enough with
the OD added. You shouldn't have to removed this hardware to get the
tranny low enough, but if there's no other way to get the tail shaft
lower, then you must! 

I would try again the turning of the output shaft ever so slightly, as
you try to get the input past the clutch spline.

Assembling the engine and tranny together outside of the car is
tempting, but then getting these two back into the car  presents its own
set of jerking around!
