All hard tops were painted black from the factory unless the car was a GT. Only
GT's had hard tops that were painted the same color as the body. Tiger Tom was
just telling me the story about a guy he knew that tried to special order a
silver top on his Series IV from the factory when he ordered the car new. The
factory wouldn't do it, so he had the dealership paint it before he would take
delivery of the car. All early (SI and SII) hard tops were black. This also
goes for tonneau and convertible tops as well. This can be found on the back
page of all Rootes sales brochures.

Keep in mind that these cars are now 40 years old. That hard top could have
been stripped and repainted prior to the Moonstone paint by someone that wanted
it to match.

Interesting
Now you really have my curiosity up.
I have a basket case Series I Alpine sitting in front of my house that
was originally Moonstone and repainted black.
The black paint on the hardtop is peeling to reveal Moonstone paint
underneath.
I had assumed that the hardtop was originally painted moonstone to match
the body by the factory.
Does this mean that there is a layer factory black paint under the
moonstone on the hardtop?
