Brent,
        Bad plugs might do this. The backfiring might be a lean mixture. The
next time you are on the road, choke the carbs when you are trying to
accelerate and see if it the engine starts pulling better. If you get
black smoke, then it's really getting too much gas and then go back and
look at an ignition problem again. A starting point would be your 12V
source and work forward through the engine, make the full circle through
the grounding strap and back to the battery.
